May is National Asthma Awareness Month and May 3rd has been declared WORLD ASTHMA DAY. The Greater Roanoke Valley Asthma and Air Quality Coalition will be sponsoring a FREE community health education seminar entitled: CLOSE THE CASE ON ASTHMA. Leading the presentation will be Stuart Tousman, Ph.D. and Sally Southard, PNP, AE-C on Wednesday May 4th from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 617 at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital on the Jefferson College of Health Science Campus. Their presentation will focus on 1) Using Controller medication (C); 2) Having an Asthma Action Plans (A); 3) Surveying asthma control (S); and 4) using equipment properly (E).
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease and currently affects 23 million people in the United States. Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease and leads to 13 million school days missed every year.
Stuart Tousman, Ph.D. a lifelong asthmatic, is the secretary of the Greater Roanoke Valley Asthma and Air Quality Coalition, Chair of the Virginia Asthma Coalition, and Professor of Psychology at Jefferson College of Health Sciences (satousman@jchs.edu, 985-8371) Sally Southard is the treasurer for the Greater Roanoke Valley Asthma and Air Quality Coalition and a member of the steering committee for the Virginia Asthma Coalition. She is also a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the Carilion Clinic Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic.
